For an attached garage with a room above it, the answer is usually yes. Here is the reasoning.
Insulated doors cost more than single-skin steel. Whether that premium is worth paying in Connecticut depends on three things: whether the garage is attached, whether anything above or beside it is heated, and how much you use the space.
R-value measures resistance to heat flow. A bare single-skin steel door is around R-0 to R-2. A polystyrene-filled door lands roughly R-6 to R-10. A polyurethane-filled sandwich door reaches roughly R-12 to R-18. Polyurethane is foamed in place, so it also bonds the skins together, which makes the door stiffer, stronger and considerably quieter.
Attached garage with a bedroom, office or living room above it: yes. That shared ceiling leaks heat all winter, and the door is the biggest uninsulated surface in the wall. Detached garage used for storage only: probably not worth the premium unless you work in there. Workshop, gym or home office in the garage: absolutely, and insulate the walls too or the door will be doing all the work.
People underestimate this one. A foamed door has no drumming cavity, so it runs markedly quieter than single-skin steel. Pair it with a belt-drive opener and nylon rollers and the room above the garage stops hearing the school run.
Connecticut road salt is brutal on the bottom two sections. A thicker-gauge insulated door with a good finish resists rust and dents better than a thin single-skin door, which matters if the garage faces a plowed street.
Ask for the specific model and the insulation type, not just an R-number. Ask whether the R-value quoted is for the panel or the whole assembly. Check that new springs sized for the heavier door are included — an insulated door on the old door's springs will be out of balance from day one and will cook the opener.
Often, if it is healthy and the springs are correctly matched to the new weight. We test it as part of every installation and tell you honestly whether it is up to the job or whether a new opener makes sense.
